Supervision is where a counsellor or therapist uses the services of a trained supervisor, usually also an experienced therapist, to review their work with clients and their professional and personal development.
All hypnotherapists, counsellors and psychotherapists, regardless of experience, need supervision. Not only do most professional bodies in the UK require supervision, but it is also a way of protecting both clients and therapists, by greatly reducing the risk of unethical or inappropriate therapy, by helping supervisees reflect on their own feelings, thoughts, behaviour and approach with clients, and to identify areas where additional training may be required.
The frequency of supervision will vary, depending on the volume of clients seen, your experience, and current requirements. A guideline is 1 hour supervision, per 8 clients, per week. This means that new therapists may find group supervision sufficient.
Supervision is free whilst you're training with us and after that it is available for either as group sessions, one-to-one sessions or email/telephone supervisions. Download our supervision leaflet for more information and prices.
The practice of supervision means that many details provided by clients are shared with other people. Both supervisees and supervisors should therefore safeguard client confidentiality by not using identifying information such as the client's name, and protecting further by issuing a contract of confidentiality to all clients.
Supervision may be in person: one-to-one supervision, or as part of a group: group supervision. It may also be done by e-mail by telephone, or a combination of all three.
Hypnotherapy supervision is NOT a question and answer session, nor is it simply getting advice. Group supervision can be especially stimulating and can illuminate your own 'blind spots' by hearing other supervisees' views.
